PPP Florida poll: Newt 47%, Romney 17, Cain 15
You read that right -- 47%.
Public Policy Polling, which did the survey, gives "one of the key emerging trends in the Republican race -- Gingrich isn't just rising, Romney's also falling."
More from PPP: "The biggest reason for Newt Gingrich's rise is that he's picked up the voters of Herman Cain and Rick Perry as their campaigns have fallen apart. But these numbers make it pretty clear he's doing more than that- some of Mitt Romney's '25%' is starting to fall off and move toward Newt as well."
Newt leads among both tea partiers -- getting 53% of them, compared to 24% for Cain and just 7% for Romney.
But Newt also beats Romney among moderates -- 33-22%.
Newt's favorability is 72/21.
Gingrich is especially strong among older voters. "Republican primary electorates can skew pretty old so Gingrich's support on that front bodes very well moving forward," writes PPP. But that's not to say Newt only gets the support of older voters -- he wins every age group.
PPP also points out that Newt could still improve. That's because Cain could very easily drop further -- and since 45% of Cain's supporters say Newt is their second choice.
On the recent dust up on immigration: 57% support Newt's policy. 20% oppose.
Newt's favorability among men: 76-23. Women: 67-19. 48% of men support. 45% of women. Just a huge gap!

"Gingrich attracts another record crowd, defends immigration policy."
That was the headline from NBC News. "For more than four hours, a long line wrapped around the entire top floor of Books-A-Million here just to have the chance to visit briefly with Newt Gingrich and his wife, Callista."
“Frankly, like the bookstore, we are a little overwhelmed by the turnout here this morning,” the former House speaker told the more than 650 people who came out Saturday to copies of the Gingrich’s books autographed. “So thank you all for being here.”
"[Gingrich] also added about those who he spoke with Saturday: 'it’s very interesting, the number of people who say I appreciate and agree with your position on immigration was substantial and no one said they were offended.' "

Around 1000 people hear Newt speak in Naples, Florida
On Friday, Newt held a town hall in Naples, Florida that nearly 1000 -- if not 1000 people -- attended.

Recent polls have shown the former house speaker at or near the top of the Republican presidential field, along with Mitt Romney. During a televised debate Tuesday, some Republicans and pundits thought Gingrich may have risked that status when he said he favored pathways to legal status for illegal immigrants who have lived peaceful, law-abiding, taxpaying lives in the United States for many years.From another:
Other Republican candidates were quick to condemn his remarks. But his ideas didn't seem to alienate the folks in Naples — the crowd was enthusiastic with his appearance and wildly applauded many of his remarks, including his outline on how to handle illegal immigration in the U.S.
"It's an extremely difficult question," said Patrick Moody, a 57-year-old Baptist minister from West Palm Beach who said he will likely vote for him in the important Florida primary. "He's got a measured, realistic view of the situation. His views make sense."
Is Newt Gingrich the latest flavor of the month among the candidates pursuing the Republican nomination for president? Or is he a real candidate who can beat early favorite Mitt Romney?As the first story makes clear, and as Newt has made clear, nothing happens until the border is secure.
If the reaction from his appearance Friday in Naples is even the slightest indication, then the former Speaker of the House will indeed challenge Romney for a spot on the ticket to face President Barack Obama next November.

Two more polls, one national and one of Florida, show Newt in third
The national one showing Newt in third was conducted by Rasmussen Reports. The Florida poll was done by American Research Group.
Unfortunately, neither poll has the in-depth findings like the PPP surveys, so there's not much info beyond the simple headline. (No favorability ratings, for example.)
But it's more evidence that Newt is going up and that Perry continues to drop.
To keep the Newt 2012 train going, please consider giving what you can in terms or money or volunteering.

Today's PPP survey on Florida Republicans
On Monday, Public Policy Polling teased their upcoming poll of Florida Republicans. Today they released the full results. (To be clear, the poll was taken partially before last Thursday's debate and partially after.)
As they said on Monday, Newt is in third place, behind Romney and Perry. Newt's the only other Republican in double digits.
And a reason that Newt can expect to go up in the polls: his favorability in this poll, as I wrote Monday, is higher than Perry's. And Newt shows good numbers across the board: he's 43/37 among moderate GOPers, 54/26 among conservatives, and 72/22 among very conservative voters.
Perry is way under water among moderates, at 29/53.

Two great polls for Newt 2012
The headlines, rightfully, are going to Newt's standing in the latest CNN Poll, which has him at 10% with Sarah Palin included. That's good for third, and the only other candidate besides Romney and Perry in double digits.
But Public Policy Polling (PPP), a Democratic firm, teased their full Florida GOP poll yesterday with two very positive tidbits:

InsiderAdvantage Florida poll and NYT/CBS National poll
The two most recent polls (as far as i know) have been a poll of just Florida by InsiderAdvantage and a national poll by The New York Times and CBS.
The Florida results, again taken before the latest debate, showed Newt in third place. 21.1% of the respondents were undecided.
The NYT/CBS poll, which was partially conducted before the debate as well as after, show Newt tied for third with Michelle Bachmann, with 22% undecided.
The Florida poll did not ask (or at least the results are not on the above link), but the national poll asked how committed those asked were to their candidate of choice. What the numbers show is that the support for both Romney and Perry is anything but firm, with Perry having an edge over the former Massachusetts Governor. But combined with the undecideds totaling about a a fifth of the electorate, there is clearly plenty of room for Newt to gain should he and his campaign keep the momentum going. (That also does not the supporters of candidates who may end up dropping out of the race.)
What's clear from these two polls and others from the past week: Newt is moving up, either tied or leading Bachmann in each. And that while Perry and Romney are leading at this moment -- just as Bachmann was a month ago and Donald Trump was five months ago -- they are not locked in by any means.

Newt the leader in Florida if Huckabee and Palin stay out
Public Policy Polling has a series of Florida GOP Primary polls out today. They conducted a poll that had both Sarah Palin and Mike Huckabee in the field, one with just Palin, one with just Huckabee, one with neither, and one with both out.
