Legal Insurrection blog: "Why I Support Newt Gingrich"

As to Newt’s conservatism, one needs to view his almost 35 years in the public eye as a whole. There are few politicians who have fought as hard over so sustained a period against the false narrative in which an ever-expanding central state is seen as necessary and the decline of the United States is deemed inevitable.

While any of the Republican candidates running can argue against a particular policy or piece of legislation, only Newt has shown the ability to see the historical forest for the trees, to argue for American exceptionalism and greatness founded in history and constitutional principles, not sound bites.

Newt is uniquely capable of communicating a winning conservative vision in a persuasive and forceful manner, as the positive reaction to his debate performances demonstrates. Obama versus Newt on stage before an audience of tens of millions of voters could lead to a catastrophic defeat for Obama, while Obama versus any other current candidate could have the opposite effect.

Newt has a political history which fits very well with the current political and economic conditions. While Newt was a combative Speaker of the House, he also was someone who fought successfully to balance the budget, reform welfare, and implement an economic growth agenda with a Democratic President in office. An electorate sick and tired of Washington politics and deficits will welcome this narrative.

Of the remaining viable candidates, there is only one who is not a part of the establishment, has laid out a viable plan to rescue the country, is not intimidated by the mainstream media or the Democrat smear machine, is knowledgeable of how to get drastic changes through the congressional legislative meat grinder, is more than capable of overwhelming Barack Obama in a debate, is experienced in foreign affairs, has a record of conservative legislative accomplishments, and can articulate to the American people as to where he will take the country. It is time for the Republican primary voters to rediscover Newt Gingrich.

Having been on the national stage for over 20 years and subject to nonstop vilification by the media, as well as seeing exaggerations about his personal marital matters splashed across the front pages, many know Newt only by the caricature of him painted by the media and his adversaries. Further, in a career spanning such a long period, he has naturally angered some on the right by his previous stances on various issues or by appearances with various left-wing Democrats. But no one questions his intelligence, willingness to buck the establishment, or accomplishments as Speaker of the House, when under his leadership America enjoyed not only a balanced budget, but surpluses used to pay down the debt. Further, he has been accused of being abrasive in his dealing with politicians and the media -- but isn't that what the country now needs?

The next president of the United States must be audacious, experienced, and above all capable of achieving dramatic change. Ronald Reagan once reminded the Republican Party that its core tenets must be painted in bold colors and not pale pastels. Newt Gingrich and Herman Cain are the bold colors, while Mitt Romney and Rick Perry are cloaked in pale pastels. It is clear that in the final analysis, the nomination will come down to Mitt Romney and the anti-establishment candidate; within the present field, the person best suited for the latter role is Newt Gingrich.

A candidate should be chosen based upon his ability, to not only engage the left, but to overcome their ideologies. The primary candidate that has the ability to do this is none other than Newt Gingrich. The upcoming election will be a dogfight, a no holds barred battle in which rhetorical jabs will be traded like sub prime mortgages in 2007. The Republicans need a warrior that has proven himself, to not only rally supporters, but to unify those within the party on a common goal and Gingrich has done this before.

It was also Gingrich that unified congress to bring about welfare reform, and with a current leader who seems pressed on creating a utopian welfare society, the Republicans need Gingrich’s ability and experience to overcome the current president and defeat the ever reoccurring issues of the budget, welfare, and taxes.

My Thursday with Newt 2012

I wasn't able to blog during the day because I drove up to Iowa this morning. I attended the event unveiling the 21st Century Contract with America. It was great. A lot of excitement in the room. My role was to pass around the sign-up sheets, and a good number of people signed up for updates from the campaign.

I finally got to meet Jeremy Danilson, the President of the Drake Law Republicans, after talking with him online for months.

From there, we went to lunch. Then I finally checked into my hotel, was there a minute, and back on the road to the Iowa Republican Headquarters. Here I helped pass out copies of the Contract to those entering. I started talking to a couple whose son is returning tonight from Afghanistan. She was obviously proud of her son -- rightfully so, of course -- so that was the main focus, but we did discuss Newt. Her and her husband are both big fans. We had talked before the speech, but afterwards, she came up and made a point of praising Newt's argument about military spending. Newt argued that when the United States slashes spending on our armed forces, we project weakness and invite hostile actions toward us. She was in complete agreement.

I will have more about the trip later, but I am going to try to catch some sleep. Early start tomorrow.

Newt's newsletter on the 21st Century Contract with America

Newt opened this week's newsletter:

Seventeen years ago next Tuesday, on September 27, 1994, House Republican candidates signed the Contract with America.

The debt we owed President Ronald Reagan was captured in the Washington Post’s headline “GOP Offers a 'Contract' To Revive Reagan Years."

As the Post reported:

"More than 300 Republican lawmakers and candidates yesterday pledged that if they take over the House next year, they will resurrect the Reagan agenda that drove the party's success in the 1980s -- promises of balanced budgets, tax cuts and defense buildups.

"House Minority Whip Newt Gingrich (Ga.), poised to become Republican leader in the next Congress, proclaimed the photogenic rally on the Capitol steps "an historic event" that would change the government as much as the New Deal did. The 10-point agenda, he said, gives Republicans a positive platform and a response to charges that their only message is opposition to President Clinton​."

We ran an ad in TV Guide that was two full pages. It had no pictures and no attacks on President Clinton or the Democrats. It was totally positive and issue-oriented. The ad outlined the ten bills we pledged to vote on in the first 100 days if we were given a majority.

The result:

The American people liked our positive focus on issues enough to give us the greatest vote increase in American history for any party in an off year. Republicans gained 9 million more votes while Democrats lost a million votes.

After discussing President Obama's plea that "if you love me, you've got to help me pass the bill -- go and read that part please -- Newt continues:

As President Clinton noted on Sunday talk shows this week, we were able to work together through divided government to balance the budget, reform welfare, cut taxes and bring unemployment down to 4.2 percent.

It took real maturity and discipline, and a focus on doing what was best for America, to get a Republican Congress and a Democratic President to do that much despite divided government.

This Thursday -- either tomorrow or later today, depending on when you're reading this -- is the Fox News Debate. Hopefully Newt knocks it out of the park two Thursdays in a row and continues the momentum. We're just about 4 months out of Iowa.

I believe Newt will win the primaries because he is the logical choice. Why would America risk replacing Obama with a candidate inexperienced in dealing with the issues we face? Not only does Newt best articulate the issues and how to handle them, but he has already done it. Why would America pick a candidate who never... balanced a budget while we are in a 14 trillion dollar deficit? Why wouldn't an American pick a candidate who created 8.4 million jobs (more than all the candidates combined) in a time we have unemployment at 9.2%? Why wouldn't an American pick a candidate who created a mass transparency in government while we endure the most clandestine administration in history? Why wouldn't America pick an candidate to replace this food stamp President with a candidate who reformed welfare, putting two thirds of recipients back to work or school? As a career community banker since 1998 I have always been aware of regulation, the role of the Federal Government and the importance of being involved in the process.

After the Iowa debate, I am now purposely engaged. I spent the evening truly listening to each candidate trying to determine which candidate is focused and ready to lead on true job recovery, to lead on sound short-term and long-term economic policy which will allow small business to thrive again. I watched looking for the best candidate to lead with real ideas about giving back authority to the states and local government, to lead in giving back freedom to individuals and communities to thrive on their own, and to lead by intently working on removing bad legislation like Dodd-Frank and Obama Care.

I feel that each candidate provides many great qualities to the political process and no doubt will serve this nation much better than our current President. That being said, I must say that Newt Gingrich stood out as the strongest candidate on the most critical issues facing our country today! I know that he will be the most concise and articulate leader to debate Obama for the Presidency. His leadership on States Rights, repealing Dodd-Frank and "Obama-Care," and actual experience on balancing the federal budget are just a few of the reasons that I feel confident that the GOP can not only take back the executive branch but also work to continue the gains in both houses of our legislative branch.

Newt Gingrich has the experience, the knowledge and the willingness to not only include "We the People" but to be with "We the People!"

We're number 26 in employment! And 47th in education! With a huge debt to boot!

Just having a little fun with all the hype surrounding a certain Presidential candidate who announced yesterday.

But that is his record as Texas Governor: 26th in employment, 47th in education, and a debt that has grown faster than the federal debt. (From 2001 to 2010, it grew from $13.4 billion to $37.8 billion. That's an increase of 281 percent. The federal government's has "only" grown 234 percent in the same time frame.)

I'm sold.
